When we were high school students we learned in the subject of art ,that suffering was the main source of the true poem that expresses true feelings .The poet's sadness prouduces a true piece of literature .We also studied some poems which were considered as models for the true piece of literature .The most famous of them was the poem of,"sarnadib" by Al-Baroudy ,an Egyption poet, in which he expressed very well his feelings ,sufferings , homesickness ,and deep sadness,when he was exiled to the island of sarnadib .

We learned by heart that sadness produces a true creative piece of art .Even joy , to express it ,it must have a motive of sadness and suffering to produce a true art .At this time I was young and found it odd , but I have no right to refuse the idea. But when We grew up ,we realized that this belief was common in criticism ,literary theories and traditions, which made us more surprised.

When studying the arab personality we will find that sadness has a great rank for arabs. Perhaps because of the nature in which he was born and affected his character . he was grown up in desert which involved lonely,traveling , the songs of the cameleer , the fear of the wild animals or the highwaymen or a sudden storm. He is waiting for his lover who has gone .this nature produced for us a distinguished arab personality which, no doubt , reflected in his feelings ; sadness became one of the main characteristics of the arab personality and had its high rank among them . it reflected on his personality and also his ideas , and by studying our literary heritage ,we will find many proofs . one of them is the elegiac poetry . elegy was the main aim of the poem .

the main characteristics of the ancient love poetry is the sadness for the beloved who had left were. the poet starts his poem by expressing his sadness for his beloved's departure . and then he speaks about the main idea of the poem. For Arabs ,sadness and pain mean honesty , it means that when the poet is in pain and suffer ,it’s a good proof of his true love , which makes him proud of that.

For Arab : sadness means honesty . and this is what distinguishes the arab personality. This is the explanation of being the nobility and sadness equal to each other .

Sadness and sacrifice for love have agreat meaning for the arabs, or even natural meaning in his personality and psychology . it has a stem out of the circomstamces and environment in which we grown up .

Even in owr deily life , were we meant to express areal and true feeling of love , we say " I love you till death" , or even when loughing we regard it as an evil portent .

This sadness in art is not regarded for Arab only but for the whole world . for example, the novel of " Bonjors tristesse" " Hello sadness, by Francoise Sagan , a French novelist ,achieved ahuge number of sales .

It is logical , and also was considered by sociology , that sad circumstances reflected on the soul . if the poet lives in a bad political and social circumtances , of course it will affect his art and make it sad one .

on the other hand ,

If he lives a perfect life with psychological , homely and political stability, it will reflects on his art and make it a joyful one .

For example , Abd – El Hamid Adip , a poet who was called : the poet of misery . During his life he suffered pain and poverty . All his poems expressed very well this circumstances , they were full of pain and sadness expressed by every world . we can not expect from a poet like this to write a joyful poems .

Salah Abd Alsabour, an Egyption aultor , says:

"How can I say joyful words ? " . But this theory is not a general one which we consider in all cases , as the true poet is alway able to feel and express things and feelings that he never felt before .

Also we can not accept this theory of some critics which says that even joy must be out of sour to get the true creative art . we really find it odd when we were still young

Also there are some wrong theories which says that the true creative outhor should be poor destroyed person, but the rich person who rides luxurious cars and uses the Paris expensive perfumes , can't be a true poet. But who said this had forgotten the great poet Ahmed showky , who was called the prince of poetry , who grown up in luxury life , he was very rich . In spite of his luxury life , he was the best one who wrote about the different kinds of poetry , elegy , love , or sad poetry .

To be in pain and suffer is not the condition to write a true creative poem any more , as it is related to the poet himself and his feelings .

I wonder . why sadnees is considered the only motive to write a true creative art .

Why we , the poets ,are always call for sadness and pain , of course with my respect for suffering and sadness as a great hunananistic feeling .

All of aur daily poems and songs one full of sadness and pain , all aur divans express only suffering , in every line , word and even its rhyme . we spend aur life in sadness.

To be more definite , the question must be like that : can the poets be the callers for joy ? why not ?
